OVERVIEW

This residency program provides an opportunity for artists to use the desert as a source of inspiration, exchange, and research in the field of sounds or silence. For 12 days, 3 musicians and 3 organizers will travel to Algeria, organized by El Mountanakil (Algeria) along with partners Sable & Chaux (Switzerland) and Sailing Stones (Tunisia). Each organization will invite a musician for the artistic residency, and a person representing the organizations will also be present. The exchange of experiences, wishes and goals between musicians and cultural actors from different countries is also a significant part of the program. The focus of the residency is on the process of the journey and exchange, rather than a final result or product.

Start dates of the artistic residency:

April 9th to 20th, 2023 - Algiers and Djanet

PROGRAM

9th to 11th April: Exchange between Tunisian and Swiss artists with the Algerian music scene in Algiers.

12th to 17th April: Trip to Djanet and stay at PlateauTassili Najjer

18th to 20th April: Return to Algiers and continuation of activities.

All costs (travel, meals, etc.) will be covered.

WHO IS THE CALL FOR APPLICATIONS AIMED AT?

Algerian artists living in Algeria.

Producers/Musicians active in the field of contemporary music (electronic, experimental, etc.).

Artists who are open to a residency trip outside of regular residencies at a residency house. Musicians who have already gained experience in the past 2-3 years releasing music and performing on stage.

PRECONDITIONS

The trip includes 4-6 hour hikes on a plateau in the desert, so we recommend participants to be aware of this and have the necessary physical abilities. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reach the places with usual or unusual means of transport. In addition, participants will have to spend the night in the desert and give up the usual sanitary facilities for a few days.

CANDIDACY

The application can only be submitted as an individual (musician).

The application must include a short cover letter (at least half a page) explaining why the participation is important for the musician in their musical development.

In addition, the application must contain essential information on the musical career of the last years.
